Power consumption these days is huge, even for our gadgets and computers. Almost all of us take it for granted as if there will be always a solution for another generation to come. But why wait if we can do something NOW?

I found this promising power management software for computer that claim will save a bunch of electricity, money, tree, and reduce carbon emission without sacrificing the performance. Granola. It can be found on their website, totally free for personal use (even small company).This is the simplest power management application I have ever seen. Download, install in couple minutes, done. Literally done. No setting need to be done unless want to setup a schedule for saving power in different working scenarios.
In the setting, we can only choose one of three power saving scheme (only enabled if scheduling is disabled). Else, is only dashboard or unit of measurement setting.

Once you finish install and setting, we can create an Granola account to track our saving. Something that I find interesting in term of self satisfaction which is be a part of community that help do something better even smallest thing :)After couple hours of daily computing usage, I feel nothing different in performance except there is Granola icon on system tray.

Care for a Light?

Flashlight doesn’t the same as it used to be. The shape and the function change along with development of technology. Modern flashlight can literally produce so much of luminance with relatively low electrical consumption. There is a lot of literature available on the internet for those who would like to seek the history and the advancement available today.

Back two years before it’s the first time I surprised what I saw in this page (http://fonarevka.ru/indexen.html). I thought this kind of luminance only can be produced from high voltage alternate current power with huge bulb. But what available on that page is so little bulb with astonishing brightness which will even blind human eyes out. Accordingly to the power and heat produced, the flashlight body itself is also evolving, from cheap plastic to various of metal alloy, particularly aluminium. The size ranges from a little bit bigger that single AAA battery to about 25 cm. the light can illuminate object from a meter to more than 200 meters with still solid focus.
And here I am with few Lights to share :)

The middle one is my first light. No brand light and very cheap (about $1). Made of quite thin aluminium. Measured length is about 10 cm with diameter bit greater than AA battery. LED color neutral white tend to warm. The brightness is okay for a single AA battery run. Not really a good product, the tailcap switch failed within couple weeks of rare every day carry usage.

The second one is the bigger. I am already hungry for more brightness. So this light has more robust body with built in attack bezel crown. The reflector is smooth thin aluminium. There is a brand of the LED driver, but I can’t tell since the item is currently in used by my GF. Quite bright with cool white but tend to bluish color. Use 3 x AAA battery in single container. The quality is much better even though having no brand. The price is about $4 at that time.

The smallest one named MXDL 3W. It is indeed a branded flashlight; you can find it on any online shop especially from China mainland. Use Philips Luxeon LED, produced bluish white. Very small reflector can illuminate about 2 meter in front with no hotspot. It is all floods. Powered with single AAA battery, the size is real small, only Length 8.5 cm x Diameter 1.8 cm. It also has clip but a little bit hard to use. The body is thick aluminium, very solid, and the thread is equipped with convincing o-ring. The switch mechanism is twist. This light serves as very compact and useful EDC light for lighting short distance object. I still have it on my bicycle. Pay only about $3 to have it.

Enough with the playing LED, so I look for a real useful light. Searching and doing some reading at CPF, I decided on my first serious LED Light which is Skyray SR-5. Basically it is a copy of Lumen Seraph. Using P60 drop in module with Cree XPG-R5 LED with cool white color temperature and have 3 modes (high, low, strobe). The hotspot is tight and quite true white but still difficult to open the mist of the night. It is a thrower, the light still can be seen at 50+ m distance but no hotspot anymore. Powered by single 18650, the run time for high mode is about 2 hours, before it automatically change to low mode which will be almost forever to discharge the battery. I never encounter the light is totally dead on low mode even I after 24+ hours of usage starting from high mode. The body is feel so nice on hand, solid and firm, the thread is quite nice although not yet grease from the manufacturer. The physical appearance is almost the same as Lumen Seraph but only missing 1 o-ring on the tail thread (should be 2 rings there). The smooth reflector is peeling off on the top which contacting with the bezel crown, a little minus on this one. I carry this light everyday with me because of the compact size yet, throwing light. For the real comparison, the illumination on low mode is still brighter than my second no-brand light. To enhance the thermal dissipation, I put a processor thermal paste and alumunium thin foil around the drop in module to fill the gap with the body. Works pretty well. Cause of having this light, I begin to have more 18650 battery cell and charger, thus the next light is arrived :D

I was hoping SSC P7 LED is brighter than XPG R5. It is a quad core LED on single die. Aurora AK-P7 has 2 modes only. I have a high expectation when decide to buy this light, especially since the manufacture rating is 900 lumens and the price is double than SR-5. The body is the best from all, very solid, very neat finishing, the threads are real smooth. The head is glued but to release the driver still can be done from the bezel. But 2 major problems make me not happy. First, the low mode is using resistor hence there is no battery saving while running on low lumens. Second, the tailcap switch is miserable, causing the light to be flickering and sometime off by itself. And by default, out of the box, the light brightness is disappointing, very dull. It is a flood light with black hole in the hotspot cause of the quad core design. After months of usage, and the switch became worse, I sent it for repair to a fellow on local flashlight forum. What he did is re-soldering the connection and a little bit cleaning. Now the light performs as it should be. With fully charged 18650, the light is bright, but after drop 2 volt, the light becomes dull. The color temperature is neutral white.

My last light is on my room actually because of reference. When repairing my aurora, the fellow suggests that Cree XM-L is much brighter than SSC P7 or P9. Even it is better to use triple XM-L than single Luminus SST 90 LED. So afterward, I begin to hunt this kind of light. Trustfire T1 with Cree XM-L T6 LED. I intentionally pick dual 18650 cell power to support the runtime and the voltage needed by the LED for maximum performance. And I also pick big reflector, because I really want a solid throwing illumination for far away object. So then I buy this light, 25% cheaper than aurora, but you should see the ray. It’s like light sabre, you can see the beam line. Very solid and a very good thrower, I still can see the hotspot on 100+ m distance. The body itself is solid alumunium but the thread is little rough. It has an extension to allow using 2 cells. I see a lot of other branded light also using the same body, so I guess it is a generic body. It has 5 modes: high, medium, low, strobe, sos. The medium is about the same brightness with the high mode SR-5. It is hot and fast burn time. In short distance, we can see the black hole in the hotspot. I guess it because the reflector. I still haven’t a chance to really test the burning time. Maybe later. But this light certainly not disappointing at all, in fact, I would like recommended for those who seek a budget light but big performer.

Upgrade here and there

Long time not writing anything here :)

So, this was the last time my music machine looks like.

After a while spending time more on finding good and enjoyable music album which is mostly end up on ebay, I did a little change in my system.

Start from the transport, now it is a Rotel RCD1072 feeds digital data through my custom Canare digital IC to miniDAC which is now already upgraded in the linestage amp and reclocking and dejitter. From that point, goes inside Nordost Blue Heaven Rev II analog IC into the tube buffer before amplified by miniMAX100. the link between is custom Canare analog IC. Rotel increases the resolution, dynamic range and clarity while the Blue Heaven really put some speed, extension and attack on favorable enjoyment. Canare cable that I assembled can't be underestimated. cheap but not chessy. Take a look at here.

From the power source, since I already use the same plug for the cords, the old powerstripe is replaced with aluminum built powerstripe. very sturdy and create clear and silent atmosphere. From this point it delivers clear and powerful drive to the system.

The last thing I add to the system is resonance control, soundcare superspike electronic feet. I put the self-adhesive spike under transport and the polycarbonate feet under amplifier. Well, the control is good, more defined and reveal more low frequency and eliminate unnecessary disturbing vibration.

At the end, the conclusion is better music machine for better music enjoyment :)

3.5 mm TRS to double RCA/Phono

Yeah, at last could have decent cable of 3.5 mm stereo mini jack to double RCA. Very long time just to find good cable. So after previous workshop, I decided to build this cable to feed the amplifier from laptop or any other stereo mini jack source.

The cable is Canare L-4E6S. It has similar construction with L-2T2S. Everything is the same but the number of core which is four instead of two in L-2T2S, and maybe a little bit less fabric/cotton insulation. The plug are Canare F-12 and Neutrik NYS 373. The cable selection is a little bit of gambling, because if the construction is not so much different to L-2T2S, I worried the sound will be too thin and harsh just like when tested with Pioneer DV-300 as source. Well, I think laptop onboard sound card is just similar to the Pioneer. But since it was difficult to find Mogami Cable 2893 or 2543, so it put me to the only choice for the moment.

Here is the result. Quite nice look especially with the heat shrink. Never thought it will be looked so good :)

It sounds wonderful with Lenovo Y400 laptop as source. Full tone bodied, deeper stage depth, details and pleasant in my ear. Really a good budget cable. Satisfy, though I should make it 3 meters length because from my sit and laptop position, 2 meters is just not sufficient.

New comer: Interconnects

It has been more than two years since I figured out that my interconnect cables need to be replaced, both analog pairs and digital. The necessity becomes more apparent when others hardware level has increased and some of them encountered a little bit components upgrade here and there. Last replacement is the transport into Rotel RCD 1072. Ever since, although the musical enjoyment is always pleasing even more than before, I realize maybe now is really the time to act. Some branded and quite expensive cables have been tried on the system during the period included Kimber Silverstreak, Spellbinder, Blue Heaven and Audio Note. The only one that left a memorable impression are Blue Heaven Rev II and AN-A, unfortunately never got a chance to tested them at once.

For the reasons that the prices are quite high and I also learn that cables only helping and sometime the improvement doesn’t really linearly correlate with the price so my objective is to get budget cables.

I did some research about digital cable and found lot of folks on the internet using audio professional cable to create their own cable. Canare and Mogami are the hit brand. One aspect of good digital cable is 75 ohm impedance and Canare LV-61S is a superstar cable considering the price vs. performance. Many shops actually sell it for custom DVD component cable with RCAP-C4A plug termination for the true 75 ohm impedance. But reviews of this cable in HiFi setup are scattered everywhere on the internet with positive praise. LV-77S and L-5CFB are also famous. After reading such impressive opinion, a thought came to my mind, “why not create the analog interconnect as well?” And there I was continued googling and found that Mogami 2549 and 2552 microphone cable are widely use for that purpose. Even some rumor says that Mogami 2803 is rebranding by some hi end HiFi cable brand as their own interconnect. Unfortunately that cable type is only sold in roll measurement direct from Japan. Mogami itself is a well know brand for recording studio application. Canare is popular as well in audio professional world. Usage of L-4E6S starquad audio cable and L-2T2S microphone cable can be found everywhere among audio HiFi community.

So after sometimes finding the matching between cable material, the plug and also where to buy the original product, hehehe, I grabbed my friend, Ubi , to join me in this little workshop. Together we hunted the materials. It took one day to do travelling, stop by some shop, buy some other non audio stuff, assembly the cable with some food hunt intermezzo hehe..

For the digital cable I use LV-61S instead of two others because I think L-5CFB is originally designed for long run data transmission and will be overkill. While LV-77S has double shield but the price is higher and recalling the objective of the workshop, cheap giant killer hehehe and also couldn’t found shop that can sell Mogami in short chunk. As a result, I stick with LV-61 for experimentation with canare F10 plug because when buying the material I realized that RCAP-C4A required RG59 coaxial crimp tools to assembly the plug in order to maintain the impedance characteristic. Well, not wise to buy an expensive crimping tool for one time use only. For the analog cable I use L-2T2S with neutrik NYS 373 plug. I pick neutrik in hope of the neutral characteristic and also the plug is well design with the spring relief cable holder. Here some pictures. Pretty nice rite. The man behind the solder gun is my friend, Ubi :)

So how do they sound? I tested the digital cable first on Ubi’s system. Hmm the details is totally at different level with existing yet more expensive interconnect. Much more superior. The next noticeable change is the stage placement, wider and bigger. The analog cable sound so slim, light and dry in Ubi’s system although the details and stage is improved. A little bit disappointed but I brought both of them home.

First, I plugged the digital cable. Wow! It’s like I have done a whole system upgrade. Unbelievable! The detail, transparency, control, speed, tone separation, stage placement, decay is amazing. I still not believe what it has done to my system considering the material price, just about $11! Next, with a little bit anxiousness, I plugged the analog cable and bam, Wow! No cloud, every single tone is just so easy to hear the difference, the bass is more punchy but with good body, and what I like the most is the speed and transient, and not forget that the high level frequency is airy and quite extend but no edgy. So neat. And again, all these improvements become more prominent because I only spend another $11 for 1 m pair analog interconnect :) After one day running time, I added another pair of analog interconnect. Took some picture of it and immediately plugged it to the output of DAC. The low level become more refined, the high is extend even more but still not irritating and all sound is just more powerful and the decay is remarkably nice. Each tone snap especially of percussion feel so pleasant.

I will wait until all cables are totally break-in before trying to reorder between both analog interconnect cables to see what change it can made. For this moment, definitely I can say this cables upgrade is my best upgrade ever and the super best bang for the buck. My system sounds just perfect for my music taste, some rock, fusion, jazz rock, and even jazz or pop vocal still can be delivered with great delight :)

Experiencing first own wireless mouse

It’s already like a decade since first time I have wished to have a wireless mouse. But it never come true until today and now it happens because of accidentally found the store that sell it on quite low price. So here is the temptation, because I already decide to buy V120 cord wrap laser mouse but at the end, Logitech nano wireless mouse M305 was coming home with me.

Physically it’s very ergonomic on my palm relief. With the silver grey combination color, I get the firm grip. This mouse only uses one AA battery which consequent to lighter mass. Maybe approximately 75% heavier than regular wired mouse but still lighter than other wireless mouse which use double AAA batteries. So I have no problem to gesturing the mouse all way over.

The nice thing is its nano receiver. Their tag is “plug and forget”. Indeed you will forget about that receiver because of the really tiny size, especially when the USB port is out of sight. It fits nicely and real good looking on the side of my laptop. And there is also an on/off switch which I can surely reduce battery consumption when not in use. It said the battery can last for months. The supplied battery is Duracell, so I will count the lifetime later on.

Apparently it is really great to be hassle free from tangled cord. There is no problem to moving the mouse around. The left and right click button is firm. But encountering problems with the scroll wheel. With the surface level difference to left/right button in quite significant measure, it feels awkward when moving the forefinger to the wheel for scrolling. And the wheel itself is quite loose and has embossed line textures. This all creates tingled feeling on my forefinger skin. Honestly, it’s not comfortable for me. Not forget to mention the middle button click felt a bit hard. So sometimes my finger slips and resulting in scrolling page when try to click the middle button. I change the scroll lines from 5 to 4 and it help a little bit. Hopefully my finger skin and nerves will numb anytime soon so will feel soothe when have to deal with scroll wheel. I don’t have such problem with my previous Benq Bee wired mouse.

Suggestion to make it better, lower the difference height level between scroll wheel and left/right button, remove the surface texture on the wheel, make a little bit firm on the wheel scrolling movement and soften the middle click button function. And it will be a perfect budget wireless mouse.

“If a picture can paints thousand words…”

That is the quote from one of popular song by Bread – If. It’s true that a photograph can tell a lot of thing to the people whom looking at it. It can tell what the event is, what the time is, what the purpose of taken photo is, and to who that photo designated to. Photograph can be taken at any occasion, with any kind of camera, by anybody but each single captured frame is unique.

But what is so important about an ordinary life photograph? Well, to me, technical quality of the image doesn’t come first. The person captured inside and their expression is more important. But the most essential thing is the meaning of that person to me and what moment is being represented by their expression and being covered at that time. That kind of picture, although may not have the best smile, best pose or best style, it will help my mind to recall that certain memory, that special time, that not replaceable moment when the photo was taken. Maybe today the photo seems ordinary, but one day in the future, I will remember that certain moment and will smile, because at that time, I had a special time with someone special in my life. That is the most important meaning for me.

So, help your brain and take a lot of photo while you can to be flashed back one day :)

Lesson of Life: Backstabber

In this life, not only at the workplace or government that the some shitty person happens to stand in your way and pushing you away by any means necessary. There was this chaos once at the very low enemy possibility state, which is at the hobby. People who claimed that they are your friend only stood by behind their anonymity and saw me suffer from the bomb at the very thin of friend and enemy line. Only one who dared to stand by my side. Thankful to Jaja, great man.

Despite of their lack of urge and passion, I chose to let it go and keep tailoring my hobby to the next level up to this moment with those “friends” or whatsoever they claimed as. I chose to forget their taken action with any reasons beneath it. But history repeated itself and once again proving me that I’m so wrong to take such assumption. Whenever people claim as friend, than they should act like one instead of talk bad from behind. That is what I call double selfish agent.

It brought me back to my consciousness that there will be always a backstabber exist no matter where I am or what I am doing; that I shall not trust other easily, and that I should keep aware and alert all the time in order to keep me in one happy piece. Hence, I should as soon as possible put that kind of people as far as possible and eleminate them from my sight. Life is full of lesson, and this is one of it, that again and again, rip my happy mood apart.

It's been a while since the last time I said my enjoyment over the latest system configuration. It can be read here if anybody will.

The mighty Blue Heaven hasn't made it to stick around at my system, so I still use both cheap analog mustang and anonymous blue digital interconnect. I also replaced terminations of two power cords for amplifier and dvd player. Both cord is made of different materials but occupied the same plug which are WIEC320 and W5266i Cryo. It help improve the system in lot of aspects. Barely remember, because of the leap amusement they brought out. The most significant change was at the speaker. New Audio Note AX-ONE release year 2007 sit at place used to be for the modded Quad 11L1. No need to describe of this speaker capability. One time listening, already amaze. The question is why AX-ONE than AX-TWO?

Well, we all know that AX-ONE is warmer than AZ-TWO, but with a floorstander, it can be a war zone in my room hehehe...Second reason is that dunno when this AX-TWO will show up here and also dunno about the price tag. So it lead to AX-ONE which happen to be the cheapest among all Audio Note speaker yet itself already much expensive than any other brand, but guess what it all paid off. Warmer character is tuned with the rest of hardware to keep up the overall character to suit fusion, blues and rock flavour but still lovely and beautiful when sing Patricia Barber, Radka Toneff or Anne Murray and Mary Black.

What any other changes that have been made? Definitely my mood has change :)

IM2 Broom Unlimited....HOLD ON!

Indonesia is famous for the costly internet connection price, either for retail and corporate user. Me, myself have seeked cheap wireless connection ever since couple years before and now finally meet with IM2 Broom Unlimited. Why wireless? Because I don't have landline and Fastnet doesn't cover my place.

Well, the starter pack is simply like GSM sim card but this U-SIM is dedicated for data connection. So if we have at least 3G modem, we can save a lot from buying their modem. Their modem cost like Rp 1.5 mio. Monthly fee Rp 100.000 allow me to have unlimited quota usage but very limited bandwidth on HSDPA or UMTS network. For first 2 GB usage, the speed is up to 256 kbps and after that will be up to 64 kbps.

The real speed is quite vary depending on number of user connected at the time. The highest burst speed I ever had was 300 something kbps at midnite. At the average, only can get about 140 to 170 kbps. The stability is the plus point. But sometime still get disconnected by itself. Now I have reached 2 GB usage at the bandwidth is like dial up :( The best at 5-6 KBps, while the worst only about 2 KBps. I also discover that after 2 GB usage, the bandwidth management is not perfoming properly. For instance, I was downloading like 67 MB file from rapidshare and another one from megaupload. Instantly the bandwidth failed to split properly to those two streams and led one of it to frozen state (speed indicated "?" ). It also happened when I did one download stream either from rapidshare or megaupload and did heavy content sites browsing at the same moment. Heavy content sites included job hunting, social networking, and full of flash or picture sites.

At those rates, if you are heavy downloader, you should not use it or otherwise you just put more burden on us as the existing user hehehe...Please use more expensive one as they designed for people like you and let the cheap one for not so fortunate people like me hehe...

Definition beyond imagination

When first time DVD movie appeared in mass market, definitively it pushed VCD or even SVCD movie far away. Having higher definition of video and audio in a huge gap is the reason. But apparently, that is not the main driver. No need to use original to original piece comparison. The good copy of pirated DVD movie can easily make your original very best VCD or even SVCD looks like kindergarten painting while maintaining the price ratio 1 to, let say around 6 to 15. Sometime pirated DVD is enough for most people because quite a lot of the copies have the same video quality grade with the original. But why do lots of people still buy the original one? It is simply because of the full features and the sound quality of the original disc.

Now day, it’s the time for high definition both in video and audio. DVD is just standard definition they say. True at all aspects. Blu ray disc has won the competition over HD-DVD and offers 1080p video resolution and purest DTS or dolby digital audio. In the pirated market, imported DVD has been sold for long time and the hottest one is the original blu ray disc copy but squeezed in the dual layer DVD. For my curiosity, I have tried to compare these several discs. The entire test was done on Pioneer player with progressive scan 576p on 32” HD ready LCD. Here were the materials:

Video quality of pirated Eric Clapton – Crossroads guitar festival on DVD 5 (Rp 20.000/disc) is obviously much lower than good copy of commonly pirated DVD 5 movie. Very easy to notice, but the sound quality is better and it has complete features. Let’s drop the last one as it won’t always be available. Then I tried Tomb Rider – Cradle to Life, blu ray copy on DVD 9 (Rp 30.000/disc). Well, at the intro, the image has definitely beyond high definition, almost the same as the blu ray, but, yeah there is a but, when the movie run, it encounter casual problem. The dark outdoor scenes become sparkling blue and the indoor dark scenes with incandescent light become orange and red colored although outdoor and daylight scene offer superb images just like the original. Anyway, the complete features and better sound quality is really plus point. So, I also tested cheap original DVD 5 of The Ice Harvest (Rp 19.000/disc on the shop). I might say it’s equal to good copy of commonly pirated DVD 5. It is the Spiderman 3 original DVD 5 (Rp 59.000/disc on the shop) that shows the true color. Stunning color, detail and sound. Dark scene appears as it is intended. That is how the original should stand. The last one was, Eagle – farewell Melbourne tour on pirated DVD 9 (Rp 35.000/disc). Nah…not sure it’s a DVD or HD-DVD material coz regular player unable to read it. The quality is just about the same with the blu ray copy and original Spiderman, a little less. The sound is ok, maybe because it’s a concert DVD so audio is the first priority.

How do you tell if the disc is dual layer? Observe the recording side under the bright light. If you see wave or ripple pattern, than it is a dual layer.

Nah, which one to buy? Pirated or original? If want to buy pirated, pick the casual copy, considering the price. The good one will over the blu ray copy in video quality aspects. If want the original one, don’t buy the cheap one, buy the original release version. The cheap one is about the same with the good casual one. Of course, if you can afford blu ray or HD-DVD, no doubt they are the prime.

Rit's House

Not a pleasure to show other's flaws, but truth should be told. Lee Ritenour has been my favourite musician since couple years back and I have some of his CD and whenever there is a good one I'll pick it up for sure.

Just recently bought Rit’s House, code 314 589 825-2 Year 2002 printed in USA by GRP/Universal Music Company. Well should be good one. But apparently things doesn't go that way. This CD bother me, because the recording is over the peak limit, sounds hoarse and cracked. As usual, my simple audio system with Audio Note AX-ONE Speaker, the hoarse isn’t so obvious at my listening volume level. But when I tested it at my friend's audio system consist of full Audio Note Level 0 System which at least will cost US$9000, the volume can't be pumped up to should-be-enjoyed level because it simply can’t be enjoyed as the hoarse and cracked became so obvious.

Why is this happening? This is the first time in my life I got hoarse and cracked CD recording and especially it is under GRP label. As we know GRP is famous for its hi quality recording especially for big artist, just name them: Lee Ritenour, David Benoit, Spyro Gyra, Chick Corea, and Dave Grusin itself and still many more. Personally I have at least 8 GRP label CD, the old GRP and heard more of them which belongs to my friends.

Another things is just curiosity, why the recent CD release is always got boosted? It’s sonically not right, not natural and the most important not really good to be listened to.

That's what happening to the recording industry. Too many urge of good music too litle good recording...

Now days whenever we go to hypermarket and especially dedicated electronic hypermarket, we are welcomed by lines of big, shinny, yet attractive displays from various brand of LCD TV. In small and not interested corner, there are still some choices of CRT TV. Guess it’s an era of transition, from analog transmission to digital. Pay TV has started first, like Kabelvision for instance, in order to enjoy their service, we have to use their digital decoder. Luckily it’s provided for free for its members. Sooner, some say year 2009, the public TV broadcaster will shift to digital too. Well, should be prepared to buy a digital decoder then since I don’t think there is any digital TV in the market has built-in digital decoder, at least in the entry level and mainstream segment.(Update: Full HD LCD TV mostly has built in digital tuner). And, don’t hope the TV station will provide one for free since they all are free TV service unlike the pay TV. But who know no decoder, no audience, no viewer, no ads, no revenue, and eventually nothing worth to be broadcasted.

To welcome the digital era, LCD TV is flooding the market, slowly but sure killing the CRT monitor. Old LCD technology isn’t nice enough to be watched so big sale on them. LCD technology get better, faster response time, higher refresh rate, less flicker, more liquid movement, darker black, wider color gamut for smooth gradation. Full HD resolution become more common in the specification replaces HD ready one. Currently, 1080i input capability is the minimum requirement in 1366 x 768 pixel panel. Some brands already provide 1080p capability in the same size panel but the price difference can be at least Rp 1 mio more expensive for good display brands. The in-trend step now is to squeeze 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution in 32” panel, and yes, the price increase significantly, up to Rp 6 mio compare to standard 1366 x 768 pixel 32” panel. What I am thinking is, hi definition should be placed in bigger screen instead of small screen or even like some laptop vendor did, HD resolution in 17” screen. Unable to imagine how to see those tiny 12pt fonts. In term of display quality, CRT still ahead of LCD in the factors I mentioned earlier. That’s why a lot of broadcast and movie professional still using CRT monitor to review video display quality.

For budget people like me, best buy type is 32” with 1366 x 768 pixel and 1080p input capability if still affordable. For myself, only able to afford 1080i, yeah but not really worry since BD player still more expensive than the TV itself and the disc price itself still at 5 times higher than DVD. Even the 5 times price ratio applies to pirated blu-ray discs. And don’t forget HD resolution can only be achieved with HDMI output and the good quality cable may cost around Rp 1 million for a set of 2 meters. But it still not enough, because you will need good quality player too if still stick with DVD which will cost at least Rp 1.5 mio. At many occasion DVD player on that grade are fussy with pirated DVD. So to enjoy truly HD movie for budget people, we need to double the TV price to cover all expenses and don’t know how many times more for the original discs. It will cost even more for real HT with decent AV Receiver. Hence, in my opinion, if you are budget people like me but want to enjoy higher pleasure of enjoying DVD movie but couldn’t afford much, buy mentioned LCD TV, use component cable for maximum 576p resolution or standard HDMI for 720p/1080p using mainstream player like Pioneer DV400, it’s already more than enough.

Choosing which good display LCD besides the technical specification can be headache too. It occurred to me to when walk around at Electronic City Puri Indah. Lots of sale and promo program confused me even more. Back to the display, there are some brands and only couple panel commonly used for each brand. Some of LCD panel producers are Sharp, Samsung, and Philips. Sony, Toshiba, LG and Samsung itself use Samsung’s panel. Sharp use their own and so does Philips. I guess Panasonic use Sharp’s too. Even though some brands share same producer panel, the display outcome is different. Samsung and LG have the highest contrast which they proud of. It’s very good for movie and gaming purpose. But in term of natural tone they fail instantly. LG is somehow too red. Looking at Samsung’s scenery view is like looking at crayon drawing, fake color or may say too artificial. Toshiba too soft, slow and lack of sharpness. Panasonic has blur problem too and bit foggy but has decent natural color. Philips is simply great but only on the type which has ambient light feature (they claim it can make black color more black) and way more more expensive than the other. Sony and Sharp is tight, head to head rival. Both have almost the same color naturalness and detail but somehow Sony sharpness draws more attention than Sharp. Dunno, maybe the effect of the demo material which Sony tends to play slow movement outdoor video.

So in my opinion in term of good display, no need to mention other brand’s type as they are not interesting, Sony KLV-32V400 and KLV-32S400 are more attractive than Sharp LC-32D30M or LC32A53ML. Both Sharp only have highest 1080i input capability while Sony have 1080p, even though A53 one able to response in 4 ms and refresh in 100/120Hz which resulting in high detail, much less blur and better color gradation, while Sony only at 6 ms. But again with the price comparison 32S400 is about Rp 6.9 mio, 32V400 is Rp 7.6 mio while 32D30M is Rp 6.1 mio and 32A53ML is Rp 6.7 mio, the price does speak a lot to the end result and specification here. Thus, as the budget people, we shouId pick up the cheapest one. Why not 32S400 for 1080p capability and decent display? 3 reasons for that. First, old technology compared to the rest. Second, Sharp offers 3 years free spare part & labor cost warranty. The last is the price itself, quite too high for budget people.

How does this 32D30M performance in real life situation. The sound is hell bad, really not nice to hear even for average TV’s speakers. The display itself can be awesome if you set it correctly. Don’t get stunned by preset. Use your own eyes to judge the best. In TV mode, change between channel can be gruesome as delay time can reach 2 seconds and even longer by pressing channel selection directly in remote control because by default it use 2 digit. So if you press 1 digit it will wait about 1-2 seconds before confirmed and 1-2 seconds to activate the selected channel. The OPC feature is good one for electricity saving. It will adjust color setting and reduce backlight luminance depends on environment lighting luminance. Default power usage is 133 w and will decrease significantly to 90-100 w if the OPC bar increase 3-4 bars and the lowest about 60-70 w at the highest saving mode (8 bars). But for display pleasure, OPC is headache as it can dramatically turn your TV show become dark room or pale figure at the highest saving. Hence, if you wanna enjoy the best display, turn OPC off and turn it on again when watch regular TV or news. The wide screen mode has some choices. For regular TV, Normal will be the best. For DVD movie, use Panorama. Full will occupied same area as Panorama but it stretches the image widen. There is 16:9 and 14:9 cinema mode but they zoom it out so got cropped. Panorama itself doesn’t look perfectly the same as normal but is the closest one, because if we choose normal, the DVD will only appear in small area in the center of panel just like watching in 14” screen laptop, useless. Watching LCD TV means we should care about source quality. This is where most people forget include myself :D Low quality DVD movie or film from broadcaster can cause “Color Island” and “Blue Night”. What the heck are they? Never heard or read it anywhere before. hehe… of course, they are my own word. “Color Island” for poor color gradation so you can see the color border so clearly, obviously, transparently and it’s not a pleasant to see. And “Blue Night” is whenever you see dark image has sparkling blue color instead of black. It does happen to another color at dark image like green and yellow which sometime spurt silver spark. Unlikely the hi-end audio system, good trained ears is a must to distinguish sonic quality to the smallest detail like frequency separation, naturalness or transparency. In visual world, common eyes can easily point out poor performance and tell the difference.

Hopefully you are now ready to join the digital television era even as the budget and not cutting edge technology people. Just remember, it still way better than old one depends on the usage purpose and it is useless to wait for the price drop because it is technology product, there will be always a new one, never ending story.

Often promoted by tourism agency as antique market and must visit site when exploring Jakarta. Yesterday was the first time I ever stepped feet on the place since arrived in Jakarta about 18 years ago.hehe..quite some time. These days already near lebaran so some counters were close. Antique is a little bit overwhelmed word as what I seen were mostly woody handicraft, old artifact from Hindies and Japan colonial period and second hand goods which most of them are quite modern. So flea market will be more suitable as the name but guess it is not interesting for tourist rite.hehe…

Anyway, the objective was looking for old music recording. There are few counters available there. As I recall 6 counters. 2 counters mix CD, cassette, and LP. The CD itself is way more modern. 2 specialize in LP. 1 specializes in CD and cassette and the last one mix between LP and CD. Looking thru the dusting shelves and piles of recording, the most complete counters is the one specialize in CD and cassette. It has numerous collections of jazz and rock. Well, I managed to obtain Casiopea – Asian Dreamer 1 there for only Rp 80.000. hehe cheap…but beware. Cheap price doesn’t come without reasons. It was used, don’t know how many hands, some time full of scratch and skip during playback. In order to attract buyer, they do polish the CD with cars wax. I guess kit is the favourite as it was seen at almost counters. But don’t ask. If you like, take it. Otherwise, leave it. At that counter, it is equipped with old pioneer CD player which always error, whatever type kenwood amplifier and one dead channel JBL speaker. I spent quite some time there and found lots of Chick Corea, 1984 Lee Ritenour and some other jazz vocal songstress.

Another counter which interested me was the last one I visited. It has lots of samba and latin music and it has proper and good condition of music playback equipment. But not much to look as I don’t favor that music. I suspect there are still another counters as some of them hang LP as decoration at the closed rolling door.

So how does the Asian Dreamer sound? Well, actually in like hearing music covered with wax.hehehe…soggy, no power, dull and so on. The quality of the recording itself already received so many critics as low quality one. Just sound not rite. The music arrangement is the one I bought. Quite fresh and tend to fit in relax environment instead of full excitement like the original arrangement.

Power & Sensitivity: What’s a dBWatt?

On its own an amplifiers power output will tell us nothing. Please excuse the motoring analogy, but its just like knowing a cars horsepower without knowing its weight, without this vital information you would have no idea how rapidly it will actually go.

The audio equivalent of the vehicles weight in this example is the loudspeakers sensitivity (which tells you how loud a speaker will go with a single watt of input, measured in decibels or dB for short), and its this that we need to bring into the equation when trying to make a relevant understanding of amplifier power.

What is then needed is some easy way to see what a certain amount of power would do with a known pair of speakers, so this is where dbWatts come in. The chart below shows the equivalent figures for the two measurements.

5 Watts = 7 dbW
10 Watts = 10 dBW
25 Watts = 14 dBW
50 Watts = 17 dBW
75 Watts = 18.8 dBW

200 Watts = 23 dBW
400 Watts = 26 dBW

The beauty of the dBW is that at a glance it will tell you how loud a particular amplifier will go with a known pair of loudspeakers - all you have to do is add the dBW output of your amplifier by looking at the chart above and add this figure to the speakers sensitivity. The resulting figure will tell you maximum volume level attainable from one speaker at a distance of one metre*

So for example a 100dB speaker with a 5 watt amplifier will give 107 dB output, which is exactly the same output achievable with a 50 watt amp driving a pair of 90dB speakers. Or even more extreme, an 84dB speaker would require 200 Watts to attain the same level.

Not only do these figures give real relevance to power figures but they also show that the myth that an amplifier with twice as much power will go twice as loud is completely untrue.

You may be wondering why dBW’s are not common place on amplifier specification sheets, and the only reason I can think is that they simply do not make impressive enough reading!

Yesterday something new and really huge just happened to my system :) and that’s why my previous Quad 11L1 speaker is on sale. It’s bought on year 2007, have been upgraded by the finest master, Djon Welly, to improve the sound quality, speed performance, tonal balance and musicality; I also will give you also custom jumper in additional to the standard one, and all of that just come in very low and competitive price, which is only Rp. 2.000.000. Compare to the standard Quad 11L1, it just a huge gap or I may say a quantum leap :) The finish is black piano (very glossy). Here are the photos.

Best Bang Showtime...

It’s been a while since the last time I write about my system. Ever since then there are a lot of things happened to my system. I call it the best bang for the buck system and I dare “Hi Fi” and “expensive” products out there which sound like crap. This system can be here today because a lot of thought and lesson from The Reference, Djon Welly. He is the man. hehe…

I drew a diagram to illustrate my system configuration. It appears very simple and less attractive but there are lots of items that work behind the scene just like magic and it just for our community. hehe… For those pitiful people and the one who only lick for great physical appearance, this is not for you. Just close this page.

The story behind this diagram starts from the source. Before, I used Phillips dvd player as transport. Although it was remarkable natural compare to the price, it simply can’t fulfill my passion for great fusion playing. Circling around looking here and there for budget transport, here I picked Pioneer than Denon. Two reasons for that, first and everything, the sound character fits best for rock and fusion. The second reason which ain’t a reason after all is it gives me great savings. Hehehe… And that saving enables me to reclocking and dejitter the miniDAC. There are few more spare parts changes –censored – haha…. Pioneer is simply provides much more smoother, detail and accurate playback. I, astonished couldn’t believe change in transport (from cheap one to a little less cheap one) will give such tremendous improvement.

Next, move to speaker cable. In single wire configuration, I replaced original jumper with custom one with silver solder somewhere between them. But it’s time for bi-wire. At the first hand, I combine spellbinder and dreamcaster. The music is just so rich. It’s not like you look to big pore cloth anymore. Now, everything is so full and loaded. In condition of shortage, I have to downgrade a little bit, eliminate 1 pair of conductor per channel. It still sounds much richer than single and only slightly different to dreamcaster.

On electric source, I used 4 custom cords which all of them have different length. And why is that? Hehehe…there are something on the AC male plug (G) and there are also something inside IEC plug. Junction between speaker stand and speaker, there are also something. On the speaker itself, beside that it has been modified by Djon, I put a little something too to fit in the cubicle room. For the placement of all equipments, I also arrange something in the space. For all interconnections, I use the super best bang one. The Blue and The purple. I must have mentioned their name somewhere before. hehehe… You thought everything is in the diagram but there is lots of “something” rite hehehe…

I have a chance to use Nordost Blue Heaven Rev. 2. Simply great IC and it’s actually blue in conductor...cool

I plug it once and don’t wanna to remove it but I have to because it hasn’t been paid. Hehe…During the test I realize this blue heaven must hasn’t release all its potential. Logically, comparing the price-performance. Then come to sense that another IC still likes, hmm, 10 classes below it. So why bother. Anyway, I calculate this system price and it just around 12 million. The price is for everything including the accessories. This system still leaves more than dozen options for upgrade. The digital and analog IC, the miniAAC, the power section for miniMAX, the transport, and still many more. If a really eager to upgrade whole thing exclude the cable, hmm… not more than 14 million I guess. Still cheaper than any other one.

So, if you wanna build a best bang budget home audio system, don’t look to those “Hi Fi” magazines and those “Hi Fi” mouth friends and also “Hi Fi” stores. Find the true music path. Find your own music feel. Mine is stop here, because the next one is a leap to the true Hi Fi system, the Audio Note (yesterday I heard AN-K Lx and Spe with OtoLine PP and Meishu Line SE all day, they drive me crazy hehe…).

Mori in memory…

Everything seems like to happen yesterday. When I still remember of my first lovely dog ever, Boppie who accompanied me like 14 years, had to leave this world about 4 years ago cause of some sort of tumor in the chest and stomach. It was my poverty that caused me unable to provide doctor medication to him at that time.

That experience has driven me to think to better not pet another one, afraid of the death again. It kinda worked out for couple years and then my father started to pet new dog. Got one, in less than 2 months got sick but luckily got healed by medication but simply went wild and unable to recognize person behavior. Then change couple puppies along the way but no one seems to stand any longer whether looks weak or sick. So better return them to the mother instead of torturing them. When we all stop recruiting, then here she come, Mori. A present from my uncle. A dog of his friend. Everything seems ok for couple months. She grew well, looked cute, sometimes naughty but really lovely.

5 days ago in the morning she started to look quite and not well. As usual we fed her simple medicine and at the night she could run and play with me some time. The next day, she looked even worse than day one. So little move, sleep all the time, didn’t want to eat or drink. When I got back from office, I knew that she got shot two times by the vet. But the weird is she looked even weaker and her nose was so dry. It’s a bad symptom and yet she had no appetite for anything. The following day, she was suffering so much, unable to move, always laid down, shrieked, unable to swallow any water. My parents fed her some medic got from the vet. I fed her with verbac vitamin but seemed do no good. I was worry and insist mother to call another vet to have her infuse. Well, it was kinda planned; I was by her side when she could not stop screeched, with heavy breath, cold feet, and suddenly everything came quite. Her eyes became so big and there was no any movement furthermore. I waited there for about half an hour until my mom appeared and noticed the state. There I am. With a series of unfortunate happen to the dogs since the one after Boppie, and the vet said it’s kinda virus, well it’s time to stop petting any in this house instead of make them suffer. We got her buried someplace near Boppie at the empty field nearby the house. Good bye Mori, may you reincarnate to better life…

There is lots of software for XP themes transformation out in the cyber jungle. I used to be StyleXP user with Vista RTM themes with combination of Stardock ObjectDock Bar. But it still leaves bunch of things that reminds me to the XP. I found this LeopardXP Brico Pack which is claimed able to transform any XP 32 bit to an Apple Leopard style.

I tried it on Lenovo Y400 machine. It basically is a big installer with a theme, styling applications, thousands of icon and couple small utilities. So on every startup, after login, I need to wait another extra minutes for the applications to do the applying setting jobs and be loaded.

Some of the applications I manage to find are:
• RK Launcher > for the main dock
• Y’z shadow > provide shadow on each window edge
• True transparency > provide transparent window look
• Ubericon > dunno what it does
• Glass2K > provide glassy look and transparency setting for task bar.
• Tclock2 > for time/date customization
• Stacks docklet > for stacking dock style on the dock
• Findexer > for MacSearch feature
• CursorXP > modify the cursor
• IcolorFolder
• Couples gadget like battery monitoring, CPU usage, calendar, weather, capture, task which some of them useful and the other are simply do nothing when double clicked.

So else what does the pack do? It provides so cool folder coloring function, blast effect when double clicked and fancy screensaver which I guess based on OpenGL coz the Intel GMA950 completely gave up when rendered it on WXGA resolution.

Compared to StyleXP, this pack provides better theme integration and way cooler. So, doesn’t looks like torn and mended cloth. But there are also piles of cons:
• Increase startup items means longer startup time
• True transparency fails repetitiously, sometime even failed to be loaded
• RKLauncher fail to start
• Instability of those applications. Sometime they look just not responding, appears abnormal, and so on. This one happen when I wrote this, suddenly the Word 07 became transparent. After some time, the level decreased but still transparent.
• The shutdown and log off dialog box is not appears properly.
• The most annoying issue which I can’t stand with is that now every time I play video files, the visual effects are blinking. So the window, task bar and included the player itself are blinking from original window to black couple times. Even when I only move the player, it happens. When using StyleXP, it happens once a time on the first time of playing video file.

The end story is I will find out the blasting effect application first and then switch back to StyleXP hahaha... You should try it since it is so easy to install and uninstall unlike the Vista transformation packs and not so resources demanding too.

While I learn how to shoot better with my Panasonic Lumix DMC FS3 with Leica lens as I encountered a severe noise and sharpness issues since first time usage, it led me to find a review website to see what the expert say about this camera at the beginning whether it is the poor imaging quality or just incapability of the shooter :D, and if lucky, able to learn the setting they used to obtain optimum image capture that can be got.

Yes, I got lucky and found this comprehensive site, www.digitalcamerareview.com. They provide 100% full size image samples. Seeing their image shots drive me nuts even more coz I really unable to figure out how come their shooting is much better with the same camera when the setting is almost auto at any aspects. Especially on outdoor until I saw one samples on low light condition with tremendous noisy artefacts just the same as I complained about. So, it is a lighting factor as the key issue as it will also be happening in indoor shooting. Couples dozen shots made me figure out new informations and working mechanisms on this camera which help me quite lot of how to shoot better.

The second site is www.steves-digicams.com. Although I prefer the better lay outing and content comprehensible and weight quality of the first site. But why not read them all, it’s all good knowledge.

Just upgraded to Opera 9.5 and got astonish by its brand new look. Fresh and try to keep up with the beauty of Vista and Mac. New style, new icon set, new toolbar placement. Early morning I've been so cheerful after watch a full-heart-attacked match of Manchester United vs. Chelsea in Champion League 2008 Final in Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow. Especially on the penalty shoot out. I really jumped and danced alone in 4.30AM when Van Der Sar blocked Anelka penalty shot. It means only one thing, Manchester United on the top of Europe most pretigious foot ball league after the last time on season 1998/1999. So, it has been almost 10 years waiting time to reclaim the title. 3 Finals, 3 Champion titles. Giggs has just broken the appearance record of Sir Bobby Charlton. Fergie has been the most successfull Manager for about 22 years if I'm not wrong in the calculations. Salute to both of living legends!

It's really a good time to sing "Lift It High" again and "Glory Glory Man Utd" :)

Casiopea is Japan jazz rock band from very long time ago. Hit "casiopea" keyword on Google, millions of reference will pop up to you. Here's from wiki.. They have 39 albums on CD. Personally, I have "The Soundgraphy" which is their compilation, the greatest tracks that had been released, you may say on 1984, and "Material" to celebrate 20 years of their existence. I favor Issei Noro, amazing guitar play skill and yet very good looking-yakuza-like, LOL. If you wanna buy their CD in Indonesia, the price will start from Rp 250.000. Very expensive. The older the album, the higher the price, and the difficulty to find it.

One of their greatest tracks is Galactic Funk. I found at least 6 versions of them but below is the one I like the most. Guess it was from Live album on 1985. The atmosphere, how they enjoyed the play, the emotion and don't forget the epic dance of Issei and the bassist, Tetsuo Sakurai. Simply delighting :)

Sending Email Using Gmail SMTP Server

Recently I realize that ISP SMTP server doesn't always come fully free. It's only free if you using their internet service connection. The same case goes to server of email hosts. One time, I need to do a lot work with email. Using clumsy webmail interface of my email host which is full of bug easily drive me crazy and slower my process. So, I decide to utilize the email client since I have the XL 3G connection by my side. The problem came when the SMTP server reject my connection request. That's why I know the server doesn't fully free accessible.

My friend helped me out on this issue. Use Gmail SMTP server with the only one condition, have an account there and do some setting. So, how does it work?
Primary email account >> send email to Gmail SMTP server >> Gmail email will forward that email to the destination server.

How to configure?
1. We need an account on Gmail. Active one for sure.
2. Open Account menu on the Setting, and add the email address which we want to use as the sender.
3. Follow the wizard to verify and active the setting.
4. Once, it's verified and activated, hula...it's done.

Now, you can set on your email client using the default email account user name and password, POP3 server but use Gmail SMTP server and port. Don't forget to enable SSL and securing option. For the first time connection, we will be asked for Gmail user account and password. Once it is entered and the remember option is ticked, and then it's all we need.

If we use Ms Outlook mail client, on email received from this kind of configuration, the header will state something like 'Email from xxx@gmail.com on behalf of xxx@abc.com’. So when the recipient replies to the email, it will directly go to xxx@abc.com.

My response on this is, Google, you have done wonderful jobs. Thumbs up :)

Glory… Glory…Manchester United!

Last night is the best moment in this season which I can celebrate the glorious winning of Red Devil in English Premier League for 17 times! One title less than what Liverpool has. But United has the title for 10 times from 16 years of Premier League, the new era of English football competition. Amazing!

Another amazing thing is Ryan Giggs, my favorite player since first time I know United back in 1995. He had played on 785 professional matches since age 14 when he joined with United trainee. He is the only football player in EPL that had won the title for 10 times!!! As he played on last game against Wigan, he equalized the appearance / performance record of Sir Bobby Charlton. If he play on Champion League at Moscow next 21 May (which I super strong believe he will be put on starting eleven by Sir Fergie), record of appearance of Sir Charlton will break. It will be super fine and memorable for me if United can lift up the trophy, one time again, high to the sky and claims as European Football Club King at Moscow while looking Chelsea cry a river.LOL.

One of the supreme moment of Ryan Giggs which I always remember is the play on 1999 FA Cup Semifinal replay when he scored a superb goal after passed about 5 Arsenal players. Lots of the video available at youtube. Here is the good one. Enjoy!

Tuning in Cubicle Room Continue...

Seeking perfect music listening experience is like never ending journey. Up till yesterday, I felt my system should perform better with current combination and configuration. But what to say, the cubicle room tears it apart; hence I had to use extra tricks to control the wild frequencies. Yesterday, I found interesting guidance on speaker placement from Proson. Why Proson? Simply because someone tipped me about Reality 51 MK2 speaker. Great and yet cheap speaker. It states the usage of odd fraction to measure the distance to the wall. I tried some measurement and well, it only distinguishes a little bit in my hearing. But if I maintain the plug trick, it helps on precision. Djon Welly said, “Try to reshape the room by using artificial extra shape on corner”. It gave me idea to move my hanging cloths directly in front of the speaker. But it hanged on the ceiling. Below them is where I sit and sleep :) As the overall result of plug switching (between hi and low ports), new speaker positioning, and cloths new hang position, the system gives a bit extra extension on HF, precision, and ambience. In one word: “Better than before”. Oow, it is 3 words but who care. I listen to the music not the equipment and recording. Good sound quality equipment and recording (and room treatment) are only a bonus to more satisfying music listening. Don’t you agree? :)

Electric Snake for miniAAC

The only equipment that hasn’t been touched by higher quality power cable is my miniAAC, hence today I prepared my second snake. I want to use different cable than the first one, so earlier I asked my brother to help me buy some cable I targeted. But what the heck, he bought wrong at very high price (but still cheaper than first version). The insulation was so poor, so crisp. The copper is also so dark. Far than pure I may say. But what can be done, it has been already bought. For the AC male plug I still choose MK. This time, I got cheaper one. In term of build quality and feature, it’s lower grade than first version. For the IEC female plug also got cheaper one. The plastic is more rigid. Overall, the second snake is cheaper than first one. So how does it sound? Well, I haven’t finished with the insulation, but I already have plugged it to miniAAC. The tone definition becomes more firm, resolute, and clear. It reminds me of how Accuhorn speaker sounds. Well, it reduces background noise too. Later when it finished completely, I’ll compare to the other two on the amplifier. No picture for now hehehe :)

Couple hours ago, Manchester United finally able to beat West Ham United, 4-1, as CR7 scored another extra 2 goals which keep him steady on the top of scorer chart with 30 goals. Simply magnificent... and reminds me of young Welsh Wizard, Giggsy.

By a match to go, if Chelsea tommorrow unable to obtain maximum point at St. James Park, then I will celebrate MUFC EPL victory. the 10th if I'm not miss calculating. So, hope the blues got defeated then :)

Ever since the ITE regulation officially launched, some websites got filtered by ISPs. Some of them are the popular sites like youtube, multiply and even blogspot. I keep thinking, what on earth is so porn inside those sites compared to the real porn sites - as one of main purpose of the regulation is keep the porn content far away from public - and yet those genuine porn sites are still free for access. The most obey ISP, based on my observation are Telkom Speedy and Fastnet. Regularly, I use several ISPs, such as IM2 Cable, Lintas arta ADSL, Wimode and 3G XL. None of them have the same pattern of site filtering. Some got blocked, while another free for access.

Let’s not talk about it because there are just too many government shallow not well planned and not analyzed thoroughly policies and my blog is not about them. Yeah, like I have no other things to write, LOL.

When the site I want to visit is unable to load, first thing first is to use anonymizer. There are a lot of anonymizers available in the internet, from freeware to must-pay; in form of application or just regular sites; simple working mechanism and complex one. My favorite is www.anonymz.com. It’s free, simple to use and quite powerful. Just add “ http://anonymz.com/? “ in every single URL you want to visit. Another option is to use JAP or TOR. Powerful, complex and guaranteed anonym. Bunch of literatures about them are easy to found with Mr.Google. Another headache free solution is to use free proxy server which can be easily found on the internet, but no guarantee of the privacy and securities, so I will avoid doing risky things through this proxy. Mostly, free and web-based anonymizer is not capable of handling large size of data transmission (I doubt the pay anonymizer will do better) like when I want to download from rapidshare. Just add this simple letters “ssl”, to the URL. A “touched” miniMAX100

Recently, when I wanted to do a little trick to reduce the vibration of amplifier case but I got surprised from what I saw when the upper case of the miniMAX100 was opened. 1 capasitor in power supply circuit is damage badly. There was some sort of brown chemical substance. Another capasitor on the pre-amp board was showing the similar symptom of damage. The most surprising wasn’t the damaged parts itself – yeah, there is always possibility of parts failure- but the fact that the amplifier still able to operate and sound nicely.

The next thing is The Designer did something. He said no need to upgrade no matter how I insist to. It already sounds great with the standard parts. I claimed the amp a week later, and play it as soon as possible. Bamm…it sounds weird. Apparently, DW, did upgrade the caps using rubycon with higher voltage instead of the standard nichicon. I have to admit it wasn’t pleasure at all, in fact it was total disaster, because simply didn’t match to the rest of setup. The noticeable changes were the weight of bass increased and got slow, the SPL increased and the most annoying one was the vocal seemed to be shouting instead of singing. At the time, I did nothing but whining thru a bunch of text messages and messenger to the Designer to turn it into default state, LOL. But I thought about it over and over again, DW never failed in my equipment setting and modification. Hence I decided to give it a week running time. As time goes by, the running hour show about 50 hours and the sound turns out to be quite nice to hear. Yeah the SPL do increased but the bass weight and slow become better and every tune sound in the way they supposed to be. Sometime before, I have had removed the bluetack that I used to damp the case vibration because the heat melt it and become sticky. Rather than worry it might goes wrong, I better remove it. Maybe it play some role in the weird sound. I’ll wait and see whether the hearing fatigue will fly away when it reaches 100 hours running time.

Power Cord

My friend told me that belden power cable can give quite an improvement to audio performance. Personally, I use DIY power cord by DW. It is plugged to the amplifier. So the player and miniAAC are still use regular black power cord, although I use the best regular power cord I could find. But there I was at harco circling around to find the belden. No one sell it. As the replacement, I seek the finest power cable available there. What is it? Hehe…secret…since I need 3 feet AC male plug, I also chose the finest one. It was MK plug. British. It took me about an hour to finish the cable since the core is so difficult to bend to fit into the nuts. Here, is the picture. Beautiful rite :) Wondering how much I have spent to build it? Just go and shop for yourself :)

How about the sound? Compared to regular cable, this one definitely provides clearer atmosphere. I can feel good attack. Compared to DIY cord by DW, it just about the same but has a different bass sensation. Hard to describe but can be felt. That was the effect when plug into amplifier. I decide to use the master piece on the amplifier and mine on the player. Well, it gives an extra metal tingle :) That mean, HF extension. Since it was better than regular one, dunno whether it already correct sonically or not, I keep it plugged on.

Tuning in Cubicle Room Part II

I keep my eager high to tune my system to suit in cubicle better than before. This time I prepared another four new materials as figured in the pictures. Those are thin foam, stretch cotton, cylinder foam, and gauze fabric.

I started with thin foam. Quite surprise, even though it was rolled to form a full solid cylinder, the filtering effect is just about the same with fish filter which is has more pores. Stretch cotton is hardly to be rolled in a good shape and I was running out of it and it still didn’t fill the port fully. Rolled and rolled, finally managed to squeeze it firmly into the hole. Gotta to admit, it filtered very nicely. The bass string plucking was fine, the drum beat has enough body and line, and I can still feel the ambient atmosphere while hearing to orgal. I just thought it was enough, but I couldn’t help myself to not think about new material I haven’t tried before. So I got a pair of cylinder foam. The effect is almost the same as stretch cotton. In fact, I almost threw away the cotton. But luckily I haven’t done it yet, because the foam reduces wild hi frequency. But since the wild HF is original from the recording, I wouldn’t bother to use the foam. Full bandwidth is what I have learnt to achieve all this time. Thought and thought again, the finest material is organic one which is fabric, and the finest filter is those which have enough pores. That’s time when I came to gauze fabric. I used the original roll, right out of the pack. Plugged it directly. Well, no good at all. Almost no filtering.hehe…

That is about the speaker tuning. I also did a little trial on the speaker feet. Since it used some kind of semi elastic plastic or rubber, I replace them with small ball of tack-all. Similar to blue tack, but this one is product of bantex. Unable to find blue tack anywhere. Definitely help to put a bit extra weight.

Tuning In Cubicle Room

It’s exactly one week since the day I decided to rearrange my audio system setup. Before, it was put at short side of wall which has the door. It could be guessed that the wave’s reflection wasn’t balance. The room measured 2.4 m long and wide and just about the same for the height. Thus, it is almost a cube. On the left side of the door-wall, there is a quite large window about 1 m height from the floor. In front of it was solid wall where I used to hang my outfits in large quantity. The bed laid side to side to the last wall, exactly in front of the system where I used to sit when listening.

The reason behind the re-layout is, frankly I didn’t think about sonic disorder caused of unbalance reflection because every sonic came out of it was just fine in my ear, the wide of stage which didn’t satisfying. Yeah, when the speakers are put just about 1.1 m from each other axis, it can happen. So, I took radical initiative to move the system aside to the window-wall to obtain a proper wide stage. What’s so radical about that, huh? Because of it, the bed should be move to wall which used to be the place of outfits and it blocks the door to only about 30 degrees left for opening. A sacrifice and it didn’t stop there. I had to move the small book racks out of the picture and hang the outfits on the roof. Well, not a nice interior look.
I thought it’s only about look when started to test the new layout impact. Since staging was the issue, I used Aerosmith – Amazing and Casiopea – Sunnyside Feelin’ for the trial. Well, nice. The distance between each speaker was about 1.65 m. After that, I threw every CD I have on it and I noticed some differences on the percussion beat and finally till reached Georgia on My Mind (Audiophile Reference CD IV) and heard on the bass string plucking. Wow, it was terrible hum and vibration. Couldn’t believe what I just heard, I played Diana Krall – All or Nothing at All. The bass string sounded really wild. Hence, there were new problems and even worse compared to the staging. It seemed that all the waves reflected to same points several times and got magnified and weakens at the same time on every sin wave nodes, peaks and valleys. Good and bad signals got mixed up.

Since that moment, I simply couldn’t chuck the awful sound image out of my head. The first solution came out of my head was some foam to reduce the excessive vibration and control the reflection. But where to start? Somewhere near the speakers is good spot. I remembered that we have fish filter foam somewhere. Cut them into small pieces enough to plug the double back-fire ports. The foam only enough to plug one port each. Hmm, the bass became a little bit solid but still far away from expectation. Then, tried to move the stands away from the back and side wall and even closed the distant between them but it just didn’t help much. The main difficulty when dealing with back-fire speakers is positioning and it become tougher when the port number is double. Yeah, Quad 11L has 2 ports each. After the modifications, this isn’t hi level issue anymore. Originally, it was put about 15 cm from back wall and 30 cm from left side wall and 90 cm from right side wall. With new layout, they was placed about 15 cm from back wall and 30 cm from each side wall.

Kinda frustrated, tried seeking some help to the master, DW. He suggested using fabric in form of cylinder roll put at each corner to damp and steer the wave. Hmm, good idea. But the problem was where to seek such fabric at low cost. I mean the size of the fabric is the problem, since I need a buttload of them to create four 1.5 m height and 20 cm diameter fabric rolls. Not feasible. But then I came out with idea of using bolster or fabric scraps to be made in bolster form. And still, difficult to find enough fabric scraps. It was moment of desperate when entering day fourth.

What I did next was reduce the distant of each speaker even closer to 1.55 m and tried some angle of toe in. That was my minimum standard distance because if lower than that, there is no point of this whole re-layout and caused such mess. I also tried to put two synthetic fiber bolsters on the corner near the speakers. It just went nowhere. At that time, I suddenly remembered about my old, cotton and torn handkerchiefs when thinking of fabric scraps. I happened to have five of them. In the flash of light, I grabbed them and turned them into small fabric rolls and plugged all of them to all ports. Bam… I got a very solid bass string pluck…glad…amazed…happy…and the ambient, air, atmosphere just evaporated. The music lost the soul. Lifeless… (;_;)

The fabric rolls just damped too much. So, I removed the one on hi ports. It returned to just about initial state. Then I combined it with fish-filter foam. Fabric on low ports and foam on hi ports. It didn’t help much. And the final trial was to loosely plug the fabric and pushed the stands closer to back wall, just about 16 cm. It did help but only for certain circumstances. From the trial I concluded that it requires material which the dampen rate somewhere between fabric and fish-filter foam. Day fifth was spent to think such materials with no result at all.

Entering day six, in the morning, just woke up and suddenly got astonishing idea. Why don’t just create a whole in the fabric roll in the first place? Hehehe sounded a brilliant idea. Tried couple times to re-roll the fabric and the result was better but not satisfying enough. Then I grabbed pencil and used it as center axis as I rolled the fabric. Plugged four of them again and it sounded better already. After couple tracks playback, I realized something still not right especially with the percussion beat and ambient. It simply not sufficient. I took a short look at the hole which just got smaller. That was when I started to seek the straw (to maintain the hole) in the kitchen which I couldn’t find one anywhere and found some interesting material instead – small rolls of towel tissue. Torn 2 sheets right away, rolled them and plugged them on hi ports and re-rolled the handkerchiefs. Ta Dah! It sounds perfectly as my expectation ^o^

It’s judgment time. Threw every kind of music to it (of course used good quality CD first). Lee Ritenour – The Sauce (just full of attack), Rio Funk (great bass beat); Casiopea – Asayake (superb hi octave electric guitar shriek), Sunnyside Feelin’ (to test the sound stage wide); Georgia on My Mind (to test the bass string pluck), Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child (the orgal to demonstrate ambient), Canon in D Major (hi extension) and High Life (live performance) (Audiophile Ref IV); Aerosmith – Amazing (speed of modern rock and stage wide measured from the drum beat), Hole in My Soul (similar); and Queen – Killer Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now, Somebody To Love (it was a little bit symphony arrangement), and Good-old Fashioned Lover Boy (I just love to listen to Queen, so full of emotion). Oh, didn’t forget Diana Krall – All or Nothing at All, Eagle - Hotel California and Wasted Time too and lots of other tracks included Hugh Masekela – Hope (very dynamic music), Charly Antolini – Super Knock Out (true power drum), etc…Couple hours later, I managed to find a straw and use it to maintain the handkerchief holes.

Therefore, to tune my system, it required six exhaustive days to figure out the fastest, precise and yet cheapest solutions. How much did I spend? Zero, LOL, cause every materials was used and findable at my house. If you have to buy those, maybe need to spend quite a lot for bolsters and fabric scraps which useless at the end. As a result, now, I have every issue settled and able to enjoy my music much better than a week before :)

Update:

Tissue is a very light material therefore I encountered "the expected" problem last night, after long hours of playback with lot of bass kick, which is the tissue got pushed out of the hole and the layer of each roll got loose hence the hole became bigger which mean the filtering was not good enough anymore. got to re-roll them. Hmm...I'm thinking to find another material let say special foam for speaker plug as the Master DW told me yesterday or gauze (used for wound)...Also, last night, I replaced the old jumper and used silver soldered spellbinder (small pieces). It really help on the HF extension. Tinkle of metal, shrieking vocal, hi octave electric guitar just sounds a lot better and somehow it help refines the LF.

Magick Buffer

You may have read about this product earlier before. And there is also a discussion forum here where you will find other users’ experiences. So, I may skip the intro and tell you what this product has done to my system and music listening experience.

Hmm… it works as player buffer to pre-amplifier so it will make the music play-backed more relaxing and attaches my emotion tune and synced with every beat came out of the speaker. It gives more definition and tone body. It even makes worse CD sound nice. Ever since I got my speaker and player modified, I felt sometime the sound just too crisp and not nice to hear on certain CD tracks. When miniAAC was plugged in, the issue just flew away. Eventually it makes me happier with the output sound. The keywords are soul, spirit, emotion and musicality. That’s all about the miniAAC.

Electric Snake

After sometime finding a good budget power cord, I got this one. The length about 1.5 m and uses 3 feet fused AC male plug and standard IEC female plug. The AC plug itself originally made in UK (and He said it's a Audio Note plug, although there is no such indicative mark on it) and the fused made in somewhere in east Europe country…couldn’t recall the name. A little secret behind this cable is that the ground wire occupies extra wire put on the outter side of main two-cores-wire. I’m not sure what kind cable it is and I kinda unable to find out since the cable is terminated by solder (He didn’t use the screw) and it all covered by beautiful black and white color sleeves.

So, what is so good about this cord? Well, at first plug n play moment, I got astonished by the transient. Really attacking :) then, you might have guessed that the smooth and clear tunes are the next felt impact. At the end, I don’t really care about the tech talk anymore. My system just plays music better with it. And it got even better since I plug additional equipment miniAAC which you will find it out on my next article.

"Pasir Bali" Sound Effect

What is "Pasir Bali"? It is one kind of sand that has small rounded granular shape with ivory color just like one in the picture.

Maybe you've ever heard a lot of audio people advice to use heavy, rigid, and sturdy speaker’s stand and also fill them up as it will alter how the system sounds. Some people like to use it for tuning, the same case as room treatment. But in this practice, fill up the stands has the similar working effect of spiking. It concentrates the load of equipment and isolates the vibration. Not vibrating equipment will produce good sound. At least that is the theory. Because there are several cases that the system sound lifeless when the speakers are placed upon heavy stand. So, it’s not only about heavy although it leads to the right path.

Different materials you use as the fill in also produce different effect. Yeah, sounds ridiculous rite. They say the best is to use iron or copper sand/ore. They are kinda difficult to be found at the regular places as well as more expensive. When choosing the sand, diverse type will do the difference too. Really sound complicated and need a lot of trial and error. As my knowledge are way below that level, I just use the easiest material I could discover although I have to admit I spent quite a time at the pet shop staring at each bag of sand. One is the granular, while the other is powder. I bought 3 packs of granular one @ Rp 5.000,- . Dunno the weight as I couldn’t find my weight scale to measure. Maybe more than 1 kilo each packs.

Tried to equalize them to four posts, used a cup to measure. First, I filled up for about half of each posts. The difference wasn’t significant. I only used Lee Ritenour Collection and Casiopea The Soundgraphy for testing. Try to hear bass beat, knock, and string plucking… it seemed the same. Then, fill the rest of sand up until 4/5 of each post. Why 4/5? Simple, it improved a lot! Tighter and better defined bass and increased bass weight and slam, useless wave reflection are reduced, improved articulation, and the stamp and jolt is nice to hear :) The most significant change is the bass string plucking. How did I come to 4/5? Simple too, I run out of sands, LOL, and it was almost midnite. Bed time, LOL.

CDs Pile and Money Behind Them

Ever since I took first step to move into higher quality of sound and music reproduction zone, I have to use good quality recording. Not only in term of music listening enjoyment but also the recording reproduction. One day, I sat stare to blank spot and listened to the music and the reflection of sun light from my CDs hit my eyes. Then, I looked at them carefully and thought, well, it has been quite a number of collection since last year. Then the thought of my system cost caused me to think how much I had spent on the recordings.

As soon as I got free time which was in the middle of resting when flooding, I built a database of my recordings collection. For the moment, only CDs, hasn't covered tape etc yet. The came out number quite amaze me. It's about 1/3 of my system cost. Wow! Err..if I keep the speed of buying recording like I did before, next year the number will tripled.

Just passed away disaster is like double edge knife. Hmm… no… no… it should be double side effects like a coin. Previously I put my speakers on the top of my desk, in the corner of each stand for more precise. Since I have to throw it away, I was looking a new speaker stand as the replacement.

Yesterday, together with my friend walked from audio shop to shop at Glodok Plaza and Mangga 2 Mall. His purpose was to find a new speaker, while mine was a stand. Amazingly, from about maybe like 15 shops we entered, the same brands just showed their self repetitiously. The most brands I encountered were Target, Jordan and Empire. There were also some other unfamiliar brand. They must be the good one since the price is quite “Wow” for a stand.

But ever since I know a stand can do a lot of things to existing sound, I try to be extra careful. Dug information from everywhere. There were couple events when I bought my system included the speakers to The Reference, either for testing and mods, it always use the same stand which is Target. So my main purpose was to find the exact same stand with the lowest price I can get. In that way I minimize the risk of choosing the not matching one and avoid another extra headache. But actually I interest with Target HR60. Well constructed, very solid, rigid, sturdy, not a CKD, and heavy but the price quite expensive for me at this moment. About Rp 1,5 mio.
So after hours and travels and long bargaining, I got it for Rp 600K. Well, firstly I was too excited to realize that the posts without sand inside them were very easily to ring. I realized that at home when assembled them. At that time I don’t have any sand so I keep the issue aside for a while.

I still amaze of what a stand can do to the whole system sound. For mine, it definitely make the bass more powerful and punching, the detail is increase, every tune come out in very neat order, and the clarity make me so easy to distinguish every single instruments and sounds. For those who haven’t used stand for their bookshelf, hurry and buy one :)

Miserable Week

There is saying that big flood only occurs once in five years. This year proof it all wrong. After massive immense flood last year which water height in my house about 150 cm, this time flood started to hit on Friday 1 February 2008 morning. I was in the office during the morning. Everything looked fine except heavy rain since mid nite. The rain even heavier when reached noon, and I knew something wrong were taking place. Flood everywhere included main road Thamrin. It was blocked. I traveled to client office in Sudirman thru Tanah Abang which is flooded about 15-20 cm. couldn’t do nothing except continued presenting the project result until 3 PM I received news from home that the neighborhood already flooded. Bad…bad…

At 5 PM, when finished, hurried up like never went home for years, I got stuck. No busway to Kalideres operated. Even if you want to go to Harmoni, it took hours for bus waiting. Decided to quit the busway and wait for regular bus, luck seemed to fly far far away. No bus to Grogol passed by. When it passed, it crowded until the door. I have been waited about 2.5 hours, three 213 extremely crowded buses passed by when finally I saw P64 from Pulogadung to Kalideres in the distance. Extremely full but I struggled to get onboard or I wouldn’t make it home. An extra effort did help me to get a hold on the bus although I hanged around the door. “It’s okay”, I said silently to myself, “Better than wait on the side of the road hopeless.”

It was like never ending journey because of awful traffic jam all the way from Semanggi to Grogol. The news I heard was in front of Citraland was flooding. Hot, exhausted and my leg screamed for rest when the clock showed 11 PM when at last reached Grogol traffic light. The bus wouldn’t continue to the ending terminal because Daan Mogot was unable to ride thru and the highway to Airport was totally jammed. Not moving at all. A little bit desperate and looking around to hundreds of people nearby which also wanting the same thing as I did - going home ASAP. And there was a bus from Central Java which headed to Cengkareng too. Firstly, they didn’t want to pick up any passenger, but as the crowded insisted and tried to block their way, they gave up and I could take a seat. Well, thinking Rp 5000 for the bus fee in this situation seemed nothing. You are still lucky that there is any vehicle want to travel to flooded area. Another peoples had to ride on the opened truck. In the corner of Daan Mogot looked empty so it cheered me up a little bit. But everything turned out to be the same blues as before, 1 hour plus only to travel about 1 KM. Outrageous! The driver finally decided to turn around and tried the highway route. Did nothing better. The bus crawling at 5 KM per hour speed and I was truly exhausted and it was tremendously hot. No fresh air thru the windows. Woke and fell asleep couple times during the trip and finally the bus totally stop moving in the middle of highway like a hundreds of others automobile did. The driver gave up and slept somewhere near Pantai Indah Kapuk. The clock showed 4.15 AM in Saturday. As a result, that was the first time I slept in the road. The bones were aching so badly.

Didn’t know when the bus would start moving, I decided to walk. It’s kinda amazing to experience this thing for the first time. I took some pictures on my walking. Some people slept in their car seat, some actually slept on the road with the paper box as bed, and some others just stood nearby their cars and talked to each others. About 45 minutes of walking, I think I had walked couple kilos in the dark. You can measure the distance by yourself. It was somewhere before Pantai Indah Kapuk Bridge to City Resort. And then I came to civilization, took the mikrolet to Cengkareng intersection. Bought some plastic bags, drinking supply, and rope and then started to walk into Bojong. Well, the flood already reached my thigh at the ring road and my stomach at the rail road. So at my house it was already about 70 cm. No electricity since Friday noon.

No power gained during last night but drained indeed, started to pack and move the stuffs to higher point. My last year after the flood bought TV fell into water at 4 AM. It also happened to the spring bed I bought for my parents after last year flood. It soaked about 30 cm. Some other furniture became must throw away things. Garbage everywhere. All wooden material expanded. It took half day to wrap all things to safer place. You see, I walked since 4.30 AM, not enough sleep, hungry, arrived at home about 6 AM and lifting all the goodies until noon. Surely you can imagine what I have been thru. I like the hobo!

We got a place to stay at my neighbor addict. No matter where to sleep and use tile floor as the bed, at least it was dry. The water kept increase to as a final point about 90 cm at my house and started to lessened at Sunday morning. My house dried at about 2 AM in the Monday morning and the total neighborhood dried at Tuesday morning. When the water went away, all remain things are garbage, dead cockroaches and other bugs and thick mud on the floor, wall and things. No electricity yet till Tuesday noon. The cleanup in progress until today I write this. Well, actually it has been quite clean when Wednesday but all things not yet put in the order. So big mess and still the radio and BMG predicted, it will be a heavy rain on Thursday. So everybody still worried and haven’t laid down the stuff on the floor. We had to throw away dinner table, small bed, and some other small things. Personally I had to throw away my desk so no place to put down my speakers thus I have to spend another amount of money to buy decent speaker stand. You know today furniture all use particle board. It wouldn’t last long - not to mention the water, it even wouldn’t hold a heavy load - and will make my audio system sound worse. So, I determined to buy a speaker stand and cheap small desk. It’s a better thought than buy a good desk because it will not be cheap. 1 mio at a least. Still in progress of hunting.

Thursday is Imlek. Chinesse New Year. And guess what, I got fever! And it’s raining! This is the first time in my life that I encounter rainy New Year and also first time got sickens in the same day. Well, all my joint bones aching so badly and the body temperature would go down. Every times thunders sound and start to rain, the worries of continuation flood emerge. Uh, what a week!

The DAC function in the small D1 is as good as some full size DAC. D1 has PCM2906 made by Texas Instruments to convert USB into S/PDIF signal. In the middle of very rush and hectic month, I managed to squeeze a bit of my time out for refreshment today; went out to M2M to buy some a pile of videos and Air Supply greatest hits so called Forever Love. It contains 2 discs and has good recording quality, surprisingly because the price quite cheap and it made in EU. Now, I know what kind of cheap CD but great one to buy when looking for the country of manufacturer.

The hang out, held at usual, The Reference, and the agenda was auditioning the modded Quad 11L I wrote some time ago. I took some pictures. From the left: Me, Dodit, Anto, Mr Singaporean (oops forgot his name hehe. edited: Hi Mr. Chan), Adi, somebody, and on the knee is my young and excentric friend, Irfan, and the one held the name sign is the Host, Djon Welly. There were three more peoples, Jeffry, Husin and somebody (edited: this is Mr. Agus).

Well, if you compared this one to the standard 11L, of course it is better, much better indeed. Has been modified to accomodate the main taste of the owner. Mellow and vocal music lover if I may say. But there was something that disturbs me. The peak and the bass beat sounded too round. When the Kimber 8TC was installed, hmm it had better details but became slower and fat. And it was like having the vacuum cleaner buzzing couple meters away from the system. Kimber silverstreak interconnect did some help with that issue. Of course it help, hehe… not to mention the cutthroat price… with this 1 pair metre interconnect, you can buy NAD integrated amp like say 32x series…hehe. It sounded better than before. My say is that system did and will do great for mellow and slow music. But don't expect too much to hear good rock genre music come out from them. Oh yeah, almost forgot. This is the rubber of original woofer. Very stiff. One of a lot reasons that cause 11L slow.

Thinking again of what I just heard, I’m really lucky my Quad 11L didn’t get modded for that sound signature. simply not me. I’m definitely gonna put them on the ads for sale.hehehe…

Burn Saturday

Well, just passed Saturday might not be my day. Overtime work to try to fix the qmail and fetchmail was look not so bad since more advantages will come out of it until the kabelvision just went down and followed by the HDD crash of PC router. It was a sign for burn Saturday. Fixed the hardware, and then re-install the whole thing with new IPcop. It went quite fast and smoothly in the beginning. But the day ain’t over yet as it refused to acquire IM2 IP address and the web surfing using lintas arta was randomly failed coz of built-in filter included to our own domain. It means no email to the others and might be free worker forever man . Digging every menu in those Linux setup and couldn’t find a thing until late 8.30 PM. Whew… I had overtime almost 12 hours by then with no paycheck for sure. Finally, just threw the direct connection as an emergency solution.

Walking a little bit fast climbing up the crossing bridge and suddenly got fuzz and tripped. My toe bleeds and the laptop hit the stairs. Luckily, no damage to the laptop but the toe still injured and keeps aching till now. Although, it was cured a little bit when turned on the Jazz at The Pawnshop volume 2 ‘till fell asleep. Fuih, what a burn Saturday.

Sering sekali SQ yg dihasilkan cd/dvd player, Soundcard PC s/d ipod suaranya kurang mengeluarkan emosi dan terasa "kering kerontang" serta low resolution sehingga kuping jadi fatique dan hati jadi capek. Indosiar Anniversary Concert Traffic Jam!

Last night is definitely my most exhausted night. Came back from the office about 8.30 PM, everything was just fine. No long queuing, only a little bit crowd bus but still had to stand. Everything turned out wrong when the bus reached couple meters passed Jelambar busway shelter. Massive traffic jams all the way until Indosiar shelter. The distance only about 2 KM but it took 2 hours to get thru. The clock showed almost 11 PM. Why? It coz of that Indosiar TV held a stupid anniversary concert inside and put an extension plus giant screen at the yard, so the whole Daan Mogot road and Indosiar shelter full of thousand peoples. Heads everywhere. Blocked every inch of the road. Really pist me off. Just unable to wonder what those dumb-asses had in their mind. Maybe they had no mind at all.

I have my sound

Today (10 January 2008), I got my Philips DVP3020 player modded. Before get started, I compared mine with the one my friend, Radeonator, had. His had been modded at that time. The standard sound signature mostly same but when compared to the modded one, mine just sound foggy, not clear and a little bit harsh.

The modification process took about 2 hours and almost swallowed and broke the favourite CD of Djon Welly, the modificator , because tweaking in transport area made the tray became too tight. (don’t forget his assistant too – Husin)

Testing at The Reference created enough satisfaction and a little worry because it became super clear now and wouldn’t match to my existing system. When paired to Proson Libra 402, it sounded simply crystal clear. Not my fave.

As soon I got home, put everything in the rack, installed the cables, and warmed them up. Threw some tracks from several CDs and fired them up. Well, really nice and this is how they sounded:

“Bak buk bak buk pam duk duk...It's amazing...in the blink of the eye you finally see the light”, said Aerosmith in Amazing - Orchestral Version

The Eagles said this “Hell Freezes Over CD made in USA version became better than DW’s which made in EU :)

Then Diana Krall added, "Just sit and enjoy man” when All or Nothing At All on the play.

As it wasn’t enough, it’s E.Fertsl, A.White/A.White performed La Vezina Catina, then S. Carrol & H. Carmichael sang Georgia on My Mind, Sometimes I fell Like A Motherless Child by Arne Domerus and the last one together with great musician Jazz at The Pawnshop - High Life (all from Audiophile Reference IV Vynil CD), all of them mumbled, "Poor boy, almost 1 year have audio system but can really enjoy and hear nice music just by this moment on”

For the closure, Bubi Chen when heard Georgia On My Mind on tune, scream excitedly, "This is true sound of my piano and real performance of my music arrangement. The old one, just make me sad. "

Above, are the roughly descriptions of my new excitement and bring my music tuning and hearing to the next level.

The only specific thing you can see after the modification is the power connector. And since the old power cable got cut by him (maybe sentiment coz of really bad quality cable), I use the new winstar power cable. Cheap but better than before. The rest of modification will be the secret recipe of DW and his assistant, although I can guess which part had been touched intensively to create such massive change in the sound. It becomes super detail; the fog is gone, no harsh in high frequency, more open and smooth in every tune...

There is funny thing about my house and my room that makes me wonder and end up with no solid satisfying explanation. Humidity is high especially after the flood disaster. A lot of stuffs in my room just name a few: boxes, papers, clothes, furniture, door, window and their frames. When I put a thing on the floor for couple days, the surface of the floor will be wet. Very humid, right? But yet, from all of those stuffs, none of them covered with fungi except my speaker grills made of wood and screen cloth which are just about 9 months old.

I tried brush it with old toothbrush and it was keep coming back and grew even more. Then I tried to wipe it with alcohol and dried it in the sun. In less than 24 hours, it returned. This time I used kerosene and dried it in direct sun light for 2 days, and on the day 3, it grew back again... Whew…final tryout was using thinner. Just wiped all wooden surfaces and some cloth parts too, and dried it for about 3 days and now just perfectly clean :) So whenever you get the same fungi grill, or another wood with fungi, use thinner. Definitely help.

Flesh and Blood of Quad 11L1

I had this speaker modded couple weeks ago and didn’t have a chance to look what really were inside them. Luckily last Saturday, little hang out took place at one of my friend’s well known audio store, the reference, bunches of us had chance to see the strip naked other 11L of the friend of mine. No one is gonna judge anything, this is just an uncover.

From pictures above I can figure out where all money from the price we paid for went to. Simply superb piano finish. This one have rosewood colour meanwhile mine is black glossy piano looks. But all the inside are just the same. Cheap looking internal wirings, toy-similar tweeter cables and not so good MDF. Every speakers have their good and bad points. Standard Quad 11L is good enough for vocal music lover but not enough if you want to throw wide variety of music out load and played back nicely. Okay, enough from me, what’s your opinion?

PREPAID ESIA WIMODE, THE ULTIMATE LIAR!

Last Tuesday night, I wanted to post something here, so I refilled my wimode voucher with Rp 50.000, - worth voucher. The clock showed sometime about 8:45 PM when first time the wireless internet connected. So difficult just to open this blog site. After spent about 6 minute, decided to disconnect, save some credit. I really surprised when I checked the credit remaining via sms 555. It told me Rp 48.350,-. Well, I bet all of you advance in this simple math and can figure out something WRONG was happening because the official price rate for internet connection IS Rp 125 per minute. I never notice this odd although have been using wimode since early November 2007. Stupid me.

Spending about 20 minutes to call the ALWAYS BUSY customer service (no wonder, probably everybody is complaining various things), got connected 3 times and dropped call every time I pressed 1 for waiting the customer service. Why? Because it was busy every time and that’s why I have to press 1 to wait! Super piss off! I simply wanted to check whether there has been any change in price rate and questioning the customer service about this issue. So, got nothing here but annoyed!

To validate those fishy calculation, I tested online only for 58 seconds and it cost me exactly Rp 275,-. WOW!! You can imagine if there is no price change then ESIA or BAKRIE TELECOM already deceived me and maybe thousands of others customers for Rp 150 per minute of internet connection. You do the math if this occurs for an hour and to a thousand customers, ESIA CORRUPTED Rp 9 million per hour per thousand customers! DAMN!

This acknowledgement increases my anger to this provider since the connection speed is nothing can be proud of although the theoretical speed mark at 200 plus kbps. And you know what BAKRIE, you should just change the motto from “Hi speed wireless internet” to “Super duper hi speed draining customer’s pockets”. Wake up! You even worse than Telkom and its Speedy!

Vacant time to do bunch of lazy things, spend precious moment together with the lovely one and hanging around fool and drunk to shout ‘Happy New Year Folks’ and can’t wait till first morning of 2008 to breath the smell of new hope of life”

That was what I would write before but some dill-hole fucked up my free time with piles of crap to do hence to save his face at the New Year. Whole Saturday, fixed the installation of damn qmail and fetchmail which at the end didn’t work fine at all. It meant another damn Saturday to be wasted on those techies. The following 3 days, there I were sitting in front of my laptop, staring blank on some stupid papers full of my handwriting which I hardly recalled what those really mean and switched to my shiny anti glare screen yet full of empty virtual paper and dotted line accompanied by tremendous sound of music coming out from the audio systems. Sound of music, the happiest thing ever happened to me in this suck year-transition-period beside some funny movies I watched earlier today.

So at the first day of 2008, I wish to say, forget those annoying stuffs, and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008 boys & girls. May every day in this year, be the best day for all of us. Cheers ^.^
